Equinox Hotel bills itself as “the fittest hotel on earth”, but what exactly does this mean? We found staying at Equinox, nestled in New York City’s booming Hudson Yards neighborhood, to be an transformative experience akin to a futuristic wellness retreat, where your entire surroundings are programmed to help you achieve your best physical health.
That’s a lot to digest, but let’s start with the rooms, or “sleep chambers” to use the hotel’s preferred term. At over 400 square feet they are large for New York standards, and bathed in smoky tones, with moody blackened mirrors, subtle mood lighting, and dark woods. But there is warmth, too: padded walls, plush headboards, padded walls, and rugs prevent the futurism from veering into minimalist territory. Sleep is essential for wellness, so it’s no surprise the room feels programmed to give you the best possible night’s sleep. Blackout shades, a must, along with cooling down to optimal sleep temperature of 66 degrees.
After a perfect night of sleep you’ll undoubtedly be making your way to the largest Equinox gym in the world. The 60,000-square-foot space spans two floors and includes a 15,000-square-foot pool and sundeck. Every wellness instrument under the sun is here, as you would expect, from lap pools to dipping pools, cold plunges to hot plunges, yoga to boxing. The crown jewel might be the zero-edge reflecting pool centered by a massive Jaume Plans artwork; witnessing this at sunset against a backdrop of The Vessel and the rest of New York’s skyline is a must.
